Herbal eGram #672 Half way
Good Morning!
Hard to believe but the year is half way done and it is a good time to review. How are your goals coming—are they half way also? A lot of people start the year out by making goals. And by now have lost sight of what those goals were. The end of June is a good time to evaluate where you are and if you are going in the right direction. Don’t wait until January if you need to re-commit.
I created a goal in January to be stronger and weigh less. I feel that I am accomplishing these goals through the help of my In.Form classes. When I first carved out the time to commit to making my goals come true, it was hard. I am a busy person. But, I also realized, I wasn’t getting healthier just by being busy. If you aren’t feeling good it is difficult to enjoy anything. Is your health important to you?
The Biotracker determines 7 parameters along with Metabolic age: I began the year with a reading of 76 and am now 71 (almost my actual age). My goal for the balance of the year is to get to 65 by winter. How many people can get younger? My fat percentage has decreased by 5% and I’m looking to improve that even more. Since the beginning of the year, I’ve lost 20 pounds and look forward to getting fitter with less fat and more muscle.
People ask if I’m working out. I hate exercise. So, no, I am not “working out”. However, I do love to garden: Benefits of gardening. When I began this spring I would work for a half hour and have to rest for at least a half hour. Now I can work for almost two hours and then rest. I don’t do heat very well so I try to get my work outside done in the early morning. My veggie garden needed a complete overhaul. I hired someone to help with turning over the dirt and getting the weeds out. I then put down landscape cloth, covered it with straw and then dug holes for my plants.
I’ve planted about 20 tomato plants: miniature, heirloom and some regular canning type. I have cucumbers, peas, lettuce (a whole variety), kale, squash (spaghetti and zucchini), green and yellow bush beans, celery and corn. We’ll see what the harvest brings. I planted some radishes and spinach seeds but they didn’t produce very well. My lettuce did fairly well and we’ve been having some fabulous salads. My chard was enjoyed by some critter but it seems to be reviving. I also have lots of perennials like garlic and dill. I have some wonderful flower gardens as well. My husband helps by keeping our watering system working well. Without water my plants would die.
I really appreciate his help in making sure they all are watered well and recently we began spraying compost tea. I love the idea of doing natural things for my garden. I am not certified organic but I’ve also not used anything toxic on my garden in over 10 years. The compost tea recipe can be found on line and it is very simple. The pictures of those who have used this fertilizer are very impressive. The yields are at least double.
When winter comes I will have to find something that gives me the same muscle and endurance as gardening does so that I keep in shape during the winter months. It has to be something I enjoy, or I know I won’t be consistent with it. Watching things grow, bloom and obtain a harvest from has always been a passion with me. Inside gardening just doesn’t make it. I’ve hefted a whole trailer load of mulch; two bales of straw and planted numerous plants as well as weeding. So, I need something that will put me through the paces as well as able to do at home in my time.
What is your half way point looking like? Every Tuesday evening I teach a class called In.Form. During this class we do a Biotracker assessment, enjoy a meal replacement smoothie and discuss different conditions that can help us attain our health goals. I’ve been on a lot of weight loss programs. Some of them were quite successful but I ended up gaining it back because they didn’t give me a simple way to eat that I could do for life. This program does that!
I look forward to beginning a fall session of In.Form to keep me on track while sharing health with others. If you are interested and live in the area, let me know. If you don’t live near (these are weekly meetings), call NSP and ask who is an In.Form Coach in your area. Health doesn’t just happen. It is a job. You need to be mindful about what you put in your mouth as well as keep in your thoughts. People invest in all manner of things…why not health? Without health how can you enjoy anything else?

Herbal eGram #671 Persistence
Good Morning!
Did you ever see anything more persistent than a weed? They make it through harsh winters; you can yank them out and still they grow and in some cases even poison them, and they will only find a way to lay low for a while only to come up as a stronger version. I’m a gardener and I don’t like to poison anything but sometimes I am sorely tempted. I yank and I put landscape material down and then mulch to control the weeds.
People on the other hand are often fragile. We get knocked down and stay down. In many cases we give up. Maybe we should take a lesson from the weeds in persistence. A few very successful people have persisted through the years. Thomas Edison tried 10,000 times before he got the light bulb right. I’m sure you have a few favorite people you admire for their persistence. What would the purpose be like to make one be so persistent? Do you have a goal or dream that is just bursting to come forward?
The amazing event of a birth is like that. A butterfly emerging from its chrysalis works at it and then rests and then works some more. When it finally emerges it must find nourishment and rest. In order for its wings not to get damaged it must rest with them spread wide open to dry and during this time it is very vulnerable to attack.
To grow into an adult they go through 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Each stage has a different goal - for instance, caterpillars need to eat a lot, and adults need to reproduce. Depending on the type of butterfly, the life cycle of a butterfly may take anywhere from one month to a whole year. Does a butterfly experience joy? I know I experience joy when I see a particularly beautiful butterfly gracefully flying from one flower to the next and then lighting batting its wings to show their beauty.
Having energy and purpose are what drive dreams/goals to come true. The proper food will drive energy and we can then move toward our goals. What kind of food are you eating and do you have a definite purpose or goal you are striving to attain? If we haven’t given our body the proper fuel we will not have the brain power or physical energy to keep moving forward. You need to discover what is right for you. If what you are eating is making you fatter, not able to concentrate and lack energy; isn’t it time you examined a better source of fuel?
Perhaps you need to imagine being a butterfly and go through a metamorphosis. Years ago I tried drinking smoothies to help me get the nutrition I needed and lose weight. I hated the way they tasted. They never seemed to satisfy me. I was hungry in about an hour. Lately, I’ve been doing some amazing smoothies with our Sunshine meal replacements and having a wonderful time. I got a blender that can blend up veggies, crush ice and make the smoothest smoothie I’ve ever tasted. It has made it so much easier to make delicious meals that stay with me and give me the energy I need to do what I want even at age 70.
Today I had a Chocolate, Apricot, Cashew and yogurt smoothie that was so yummy. I don’t just drink it down. First of all it is nice and thick. I can think of it as a creamy milk shake that actually is healthy for me. I’ve added a half an avocado to my smoothies and that creates a creamy texture. I usually add water for the weight loss advantage but some people add coconut milk or almond milk to bump up the nutrients. I’ve used all of the mixes so far that Sunshine offers: Nutri Burn (both vanilla and chocolate…25 grams of protein per serving); Smart Meal (Chai, Chocolate and Vanilla…15 grams of protein per serving); Love and Peas vanilla (20 grams of protein per serving) and Nature’s Harvest (full of veggies, gluten and lactose free with 13 grams of protein).
I feel stronger and have lost inches as well as dropped some weight. What are you willing to do to attain your goals? You cannot expect to have them just fall in your lap. You have to be willing to give up your time and perhaps even get rid of some old paradigms that aren’t working for you anymore. Perhaps, like the butterfly, you must also go through a metamorphosis to attain your dreams or goals. Check out some of the recipes I’ve created: http://www.bornforhealth.com/inform.html
If your dreams or goals include getting healthier, consider joining our fall group of In.Form!

Herbal eGram #670 Faith
Good Morning!
Some say faith is the opposite of fear. Feed your faith and your fears will starve to death. ~Author Unknown. Faith is your convictions; your beliefs. Some of these beliefs are inherited and some are lessons learned. I love this quote by Earl Nightingale: “Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use.”
How many times do we put off doing a project because we’re afraid? Maybe we’re afraid we can’t complete it or have the necessary tools? Maybe it is the goal of getting healthy. Perhaps you’ve lost weight and just gained it all back and it seems like an ever spinning yoyo. You’ve only discovered some of the ways it won’t work. There is obviously something that you need to do to maintain a healthy weight that hasn’t been addressed by the ways you’ve already tried.
You’ve probably heard of the failures of Thomas Edison in trying to achieve his goal in making a light bulb. “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work”. He believed it was possible and would not let the negativity of others get in his way. I’m sure you haven’t tried 10,000 ways to lose weight and keep it off, although it can be just as discouraging. Perhaps you’ve tried to reach other goals but have been less than satisfied with the results.
There are many people who could be sited as examples of having faith: Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, Abraham Lincoln…I’m sure you have a few favorites too. What goals have you been afraid to tackle because of fear? Maybe you’ve failed at something and are afraid to try it again. Maybe it is relationships. Trusting that someone will respect your feelings and share them is scary especially when you’ve been hurt before.
The difference between wanting something and creating a goal is passion and faith. These two emotions are what keep you going when times are tough along with love. If your goals aren’t coming to fruition then do a check and see if you need to raise the bar on your emotional energy. Emotional energy comes from passion encouraged by faith. Passion, or desire to accomplish something needs to be kindled daily.
Write your goal down on a piece of paper and state how you will feel when you’ve accomplished your goal. Who will benefit from your achievement? Since you can’t get something for nothing, what are you willing to give in return for achieving your goal? Time, Money, hard work, dedication are all things that people are willing to give to reach their goals.
Today, Dr. Jay Vanden Heuvel is doing a webinar on Vitality. This life force is encouraged by the three emotions of faith, passion and love. You can view this webinar and past webinars by going to www.nspwebinars.com. When fear stops you from doing what you want, find a way to encourage your convictions and “keep the faith”.

Herbal eGram #669 Busy or Productive
Good Morning!
June is a busy month: weddings, graduations, gardening, vacations…you name it and its just plain busy. We have to make some tough choices as to what we are going to include in our schedule and who we have to disappoint and leave out. We can’t do it all. We also can’t please everyone. That is a sure way to go crazy. We first have to realize that there is only so much time in a day and we need to use it wisely. Knowing priorities helps with the decision making.
A busy schedule can be unproductive sometimes. If we don’t plan properly we end up having to do over something that doesn’t get done due to poor planning. So, you may be familiar with the story of the professor trying to show the importance of priority planning. Here is my rendition:
Take a quart jar and put in some big stones and when the jar is full you can say: the jar is full! But what if you had some pebbles from the beach…you could add those and some would fit. And what if you had some sand? You would probably have room for that. And while you were contemplating the fullness of your jar you had a sip of coffee and for kicks, added the rest of it to the jar. Now the jar is full!
Priority planning: the big rocks are your family and relationships. We need to nourish them and pay attention to them. I might add that I feel one of the big rocks should be your health because without it, you can’t do anything! The pebbles are the things that need to be done to assure vitality: food; laundry; sleep and personal care etc. The sand represents all the little things that tend to get in our way. A lot of us fill the jar with this first and find no room for the big rocks or the pebbles. The coffee represents finding joy. In everything you do make sure you find joy.
Health is often what will take a hit when schedules are busy. We forget to take our supplements; forget to drink our water; get offered too many foods that don’t fit in with our healthy choices; not enough sleep; I’m sure you can add in a few things, but you get my point. So, take some time and set your supplements up for the week in little baggies. Make sure you have some meal replacements on hand so you can shake and go. I love the Nature’s Harvest. It is good even mixed just with cold water. If you skip a meal you know when you are hungry you will grab what isn’t good for you. Bring water with you wherever you go so you can get hydrated frequently.
Planning to get through the busy-ness and be productive in health means taking a little time out to do what needs to be done. Don’t wait until the light on the dash says you’re running on empty. Or, worse yet, find yourself on a deserted road without gas. In these days with cell phones, that isn’t too bad but, what if you have no signal? In your busy schedule make sure you plan on how you can remain healthy through the hectic times.
If you are confused as to what you can do to keep healthy during this busy season and have specific questions, email me. I’ll be happy to help you decide what would benefit you the most. Make sure you have an emergency kit in a “keep cool” lunch bag. These are my Super Seven!
- Charcoal (for food poisoning or as a poultice for stings),
- Histablock (a natural anti-histamine),
- Black Walnut liquid (an astringent that works great for mouth sores of any kind),
- Silver (gel and liquid) can be taken daily to support the immune system and the gel can be used to protect against bacteria, viruses and fungal infections,
- Aloe gel (sunburn and makes for a great base as a poultice to mix herbs into),
- Distress Remedy (for any acute injury—helps to calm and speeds repair; take orally or apply topically)
- Lavender E/O (add to the aloe for sunburn or any burn; taking a relaxing bath after a hard day; tissue healer and calmative) Make a spray with 1 teaspoon of Silver; 1 dropper Distress Remedy and 5 drops of Lavender Essential oil. Add these to a 2 ounce spray bottle and fill with purified water to keep on hand. You can spray it on wounds to wash it and disinfect without hurting and assist with tissue healing! I call it my BooBoo spray.
Enjoy your busy times. Make wonderful memories and stay healthy!

Herbal eGram #668 Soothing
Good Morning!
What do you find soothing? Some people run and find that it soothes the stress out. Often times doing a physical activity will relieve stress and you feel better afterwards. Others listen to music. Some music can aggravate emotions like anger and depression so pick your music wisely when trying to soothe your nerves.
I love to garden. I enjoy hearing the birds and feeling the sun on my face and smelling the beautiful scents of flowers and grass. I am lucky…I don’t have allergies. When the body creates a response due to pollen in the air, we call it an allergy. Sometimes the response is itchy, watery eyes; other times it is sneezing and occasionally it is coughing. These responses are normal actions when the body is trying to eliminate an irritant. But why is something so natural irritating to the body?
Our bodies have billions of cells and most of those cells are microbial. When the balance of these microbes becomes disrupted it is called dysbiosis. Billions of these cells are on the inside and outside of our body and are connected to our immune system through the mucus that surrounds each cell. The mucus creates a communication network that sends signals throughout the body. Sometimes the signals are pleasant—all is okay; other times it is distress; alert, we are under attack! Dysbiosis can be minor or serious. The serious disruption of imbalance results in chronic illness.
This disruption can occur from our environment, stress, food we eat, thoughts we think and medications we take. Basically everything can contribute to balance or imbalance. Our neighborhood of cells usually live in harmony, however when some of the neighborhood cells grow faster and become out of balance, the rest of the neighborhood goes into alert. Soothing this alertness is what adaptogenic herbs do. They are there to calm and initiate balance again.
Adaptogenic herbs do not push the body in any certain direction they simply offer nutrition and comfort. I find Astragalus one of the best herbs to support this calmness. When people are debilitated after years of disease or illness and the body is weak, adaptogenic herbs can give the body the energy it needs to fight again. There are many to choose from: Astragalus, Eleuthero, Ginseng (American, Korean, Siberian), Suma, and Una de Gato to name a few. Noni juice made from the Morinda fruit is also considered a “full body” tonic but especially soothing to the kidneys.
I feel that one has to give the body some beneficial bacteria (away from meals) to reverse the microbial imbalance. Friendly bacteria are not digestive aids but more like support for the milieu—the neighborhood. When one has to take medications it throws off the balance of the body and the microbes have to adjust. This adjustment often makes for a disruption in the neighborhood. The longer the medication is taken the harder it is for the neighborhood to get back into balance. If you take adaptogenic herbs and probiotics you will greatly assist the process of normalcy.
If you struggle with allergies you need to first stop putting your body into challenging positions. Stop eating sugar, gluten and dairy as these inflame the irritation. Let go of situations that anger or depress you. Take supporting supplements to assist in the health of your body. Eat at least 5 servings of veggies daily along with healthy proteins and fats. Drink half your body weight in ounces of purified water to flush out toxins and hydrate cells (mucus needs plenty of water to be healthy). Think and do things that bring you joy and laughter. Talk with your doctor about the necessity of the medications you are taking and see if there are more natural alternatives.
Stop taking unnecessary over the counter medications (not recommended by your doctor) that you do daily such as aspirin, anti-histamines, pain medications, epinephrine, cortisol etc. There are some very wonderful natural supplements that do not cause the body harm and can achieve the balance you are looking for. Find a natural doctor (Naturopath) or Nutritional Consultant and advisor that can help you transform your body into the amazing and powerful being it was meant to be.
Also, be aware of the chemicals you use on a daily basis and see if they can be eliminated or changed out for something less harmful. These chemicals include: cosmetics, body washes and sprays; home care and cleaning products and especially outdoor chemicals like fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides that disrupt the environment. These chemicals are very harmful and have some devastating effects on our health. There are some wonderful natural products that have been shown to be beneficial to both garden and you. www.GardensAlive.com
Get out and exercise by doing what you find enjoyable! Your body was meant to be mobile. Use your muscles and feed them the food they need to be strong and vital. Feed your mind with healthy and inspirational books and audio/visual stimulation. Be grateful every day for what you have been blessed with. Beauty is all around you—look for it!

Herbal eGram #667 Reactions
Good Morning!
A reaction is a response to stimuli. There are many different kinds of reactions but the one I want to discuss is the response mechanism our body goes through due to a stress (or perceived stress). Some stress events are due to what we think might happen. Most of the time, our “perceived” stress never happens. Unfortunately our body goes through the same responses as real stress. The pulse increases, blood pressure rises and our adrenal glands go into flight or fight mode. Hormones that are highly inflammable race through our body causing damage to cells.
When the nervous system is healthy it responds and adjusts (or adapts) quickly. We can recognize danger and decide whether we need to respond to it or not. We can use the space between stimuli and response called “Pause”. Often people ignore the pause until it becomes non-existent. Develop this area between action and reaction. It is where rationalization comes into play.
For example: you are watching a horror movie and your heart is pounding and you are scared. If you push the pause button for even a few seconds you will be able to realize—this isn’t real and it isn’t happening to me. Sometimes we “worry”. Worry is a perceived threat. It hasn’t happened and it isn’t happening. It just “may” happen. Research shows that 90% of worry never happens!
When we haven’t given our body the proper tools such as enough B vitamins, proper rest and water the nervous system hyper reacts. This can occur when we’ve given our body the wrong food or introduced chemicals that stimulate the nervous system adversely such as caffeine or other stimulants (especially sugar). Little children quickly respond to sugar and it irritates their brain in such a way their behavior responds. They can’t control it because they haven’t got enough nutrients and rational thought. You must not let them have these foods! Some children respond this same way to gluten. Observe your child’s behavior shortly after ingesting certain food.
Nervous system support is important for those people who have high levels of stress daily. The stress stimuli can be from work, family, physical conditions etc. The more stress one has the more they need to supplement and compensate with proper rest, good diet, water and exercise. If you don’t do what you can to offset the stress, your body will go into hyper mode and eventually burn out.
I see Adrenal Exhaustion and Burn Out in my clients often. Some ways you can identify it is: Tired but can’t sleep; jumpy; on edge; can’t seem to relax; brain goes in many directions at once; body twitches; dilated pupils; headaches; stomach issues and many more. Taking supplements such as Nutri Calm 3-4 times daily and drinking half your body weight in ounces of water may help.
You also need to try to get to bed before 11pm and arise no sooner than 8 hrs later. My bedtime is generally 10:30 and I get up around 6am. Sound sleep is important to refuel the nervous system: Herbal Sleep is beneficial for inability to sleep deeply. Some people are helped by Melatonin and others by 5HTP. These supports are natural and non-addictive. If you don’t see any change in taking one of the suggested supplements within a week—try something different and make sure you are eating the right kinds of food and doing some of the other things suggested in this article.
Getting off of sugar and grains can also support better Nervous System health. Sugar and its replacement, high fructose corn syrup, are extremely harmful for the nervous system. I don’t recommend artificial sweeteners. They create a whole raft of other problems. Stevia and xylitol don’t create an insulin response and they don’t seem to jumpstart the stress response like sugar does.
Find time to take deep breaths and let go of what you have no control over. When a person is in stress mode their breathing is shallow and fast paced. Pause mode allows you to take a deep breath and engage rational thinking. Fear drives stress. Examine what it is that you are afraid of and ask yourself, “Is this real”? If it is: what can you do about it? If nothing, then let it go. Worry accomplishes nothing. Take some AnxiousLess and get back in control.
If there is no real threat, ask yourself: How would I feel if I didn’t think this thought? If you are normal, you will answer with: better; happy; more at ease, etc. The next thing is to tell yourself to think of something that makes you feel better. And do it! Each time the stressful thought enters in just repeat the process. Make sure you are eating well, getting good exercise, drinking water and taking some support supplements.
Soon your body will have healthy and happy reactions rather than stressful ones. It is a formula of correct nutrients, correct thinking and correct doing. You have control over your thoughts. Sometimes you need help. Examine what you aren’t doing to have healthy reactions and change them.

Herbal eGram #666 Hydration
Good Morning!
If you are like most people, you think that thirst is an indicator that you need water, but it actually is a sign that you are already dehydrated. Some people say that hunger is actually a sign that you need more water. Low tear levels, dry skin, low urine output, dry mouth, dry skin are all signs of dehydration. Constipation is a sign often not looked at as a need for more water. The large intestine’s job is to absorb water from the stool. When fecal material is left too long in the colon it becomes dry and peristalsis is difficult.
What is your reason for drinking more water? Is your skin dry and flaky? Winter can dehydrate skin cells and most people will slather on lotions to keep their skin moist but what they need to do is drink more water. Not all fluids help the body hydrate. Every time you drink a can of soda or other beverages you lose an opportunity to hydrate. Some fluids like alcohol and coffee will actually dehydrate you so you need to compensate by drinking even more water. Make sure that for every sip of dehydrating fluids you take in you are also taking in an ounce or two of water.
Why is it important to be hydrated? Inability to think clearly is a sign of dehydration. Do you ever feel like you make poor choices? Or, after something happens you ask yourself: What was I thinking? Well, perhaps it was because your brain didn’t have enough water to help you think clearly. Headaches are often caused by lack of water. So, maybe it wasn’t that aspirin you took that helped but the glass of water you took it with.
What about Gatorade or other sports drinks for hydration? The ingredients listed in Gatorade: water, sugar, table salt, carbohydrates, electrolytes (110 mg sodium, 30 mg potassium, 93 mg chloride), high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, glucose, fructose, and sugar. Did you read closely? After water is sugar, then salt (not healthy salt either!). There are actually 5 references to sugar in the drink plus coloring agents and carbohydrates (which could also mean sugar). Some of the sports drinks are sweetened with Stevia but still, for the average person these ingredients are not necessary and some are actually harmful. This may be a good drink for someone who is sweating out faster than their body can hydrate with just water. Most of us don’t need it.
Most of us need to hydrate our cells. In order to do this properly you need to slowly introduce the water an ounce or two at a time. You also need a proper exchange of sodium and potassium. Potassium is one of the electrolyte minerals used to regulate fluids and energy in the body. The inside of the cells are high in potassium whereas the outside of the cells are high in sodium. That is why high sodium food intake will cause edema (swelling in the tissues). The cells aren’t properly exchanging because sodium and potassium are out of balance. When the average person drinks a high sodium fluid it can throw off this balance.
Determining hydration levels can be done by looking at specific gravity measurements in the urine with a tool called a hydrometer. But wait, there’s a new kid in town! Liquids have been measured with hydrometers since the 1700s. The new kid, called a Bio Tracker can measure hydration levels based on vibration, or energy response. http://www.bornforhealth.com/inform.html
Your body water fluctuates during the day. Drinking a large glass of water at one sitting is not going to change your hydration levels. This may flush out your kidneys but it isn’t hydrating cells (and this is the objective). Eating large meals, drinking alcohol or caffeine, illness, exercise, menstruation and even bathing can affect hydration levels. Normal body water percentage ranges for women between 45-60% and men between 50-60%. Because muscle holds water and men are considered more muscular, their ratio is higher. As body fat increases however, water percentage will decrease.
High Blood Pressure, or Hypertension can be helped by proper water intake and having a good balance of potassium and sodium. Potassium helps regulate nervous function so even though it is an abundant mineral in most vegetables, you may still need to supplement due to medicines or stress. NSP has Potassium Combination and it is a natural trace mineral and potassium supplement that can help balance sodium and potassium levels in the body.
Adding fresh lemons, fruit like watermelon and or herbs like mint can help water taste better if you are trying to drink more water but don’t like the clean taste of it. Tap water is not clean water as it is loaded with chemicals like chlorine and fluoride. My favorite is water that has been purified by reverse osmosis: http://www.naturessunshine.com/us/general/search/?q=Nature%27s+Spring Other options would be alkaline water if you have been tested that your saliva is too acid and structured water to increase bioavailability. Whatever your choice: Drink Up!

Herbal eGram #665 Feeling Safe
Good Morning!
What do you do to feel safe? This was a question posed by my 3 year old granddaughter’s teacher in preschool. Some of the children used the usual things like holding hands and wearing a seat belt. So when Katie was asked what she does to be safe she replied: “I use a toothpick to eat my pears”. ; o As a background: my son wanted Katie to eat some delicious pears but they were sticky and she didn’t want to touch them. He decided he’d cut the pear up in cubes and make them appealing and put a toothpick in it for her to eat the cubed pears.
Safety is a perception! It is a feeling that we have when “all is well and I’m doing the right thing”. There are people who obsess about safety and will lock and unlock the door a certain number of times. (Jack Nicholson in As Good as it Gets). Other people do not feel safe leaving their house. Some people obsess about insects. Fear can be a driving force but mostly it drives us to unhappiness. If you want to get a handle on your fears and understand where they are coming from there are many great books you can read.
Fear and worry are conquered by reasoning. To help us get to reasoning there is an Herbal formula called AnxiousLess. The natural constituents of this formula actually stop the overreaction of the brain to cycle the energy of fear and worry. Many people have taken this product to get a handle on their fears and have had some amazing results. Trial packs are now available.
Prevention and doing things we know that keep us safe is a way to feel secure in our home, vehicles, and in our health. Feeling safe is imperative because the opposite is to feel fearful. Many of us live from one fear moment to the next. This is the biggest stressor of all. Many of our fears never come to pass so how do we learn not to give in to them? One way is to make sure we are doing things that protect us such as lock doors; use seat belts; learn the rules (what is expected of us) etc. In health, we are given a lot of miscues about what is healthy.
Eating right isn’t always possible so we take multi vitamins and minerals and other supplements to add to what we know will help keep us healthy. This can be confusing at times. Maybe you are confused as to what really is healthy. We’ve heard that fats are bad—but now we know our brain needs them and so we have to figure out which fats are good. We’ve heard salt is bad, but many experts tell us using a full spectrum sea salt is important for helping mineral reserves. No wonder people are confused!
Sometimes being able to have knowledge at your fingertips such as Google and other sources of information is a blessing but most of us need some guidance. There are people out there that do not have your best interest at heart. They only want to sell product. This includes the drug manufacturers. How do you know what to follow? Many people followed the Adkins diet; the South Beach diet; the grapefruit diet and the cabbage soup diet. These are not healthy as these “diets” don’t teach people basic nutritional needs and what your body needs to be healthy.
Losing weight is not the objective in being healthy. Teaching your body to burn fat is considered the best way to deter disease. It isn’t fat that will kill you—it is sugar and other carbohydrates! Our bodies have been trained to burn carbs for energy. Cancer also uses carbs for energy and perhaps this is why one out of three people will have cancer of some sort. If you want to protect your body against cancer, train your body to burn fat. We teach this in our 13 week course called: In Form.
We will inform you as to the latest research in healthy procedures; how to eat a balanced diet that will help your body be fit and burn fat. How much do you spend in medical bills? Would it be worth it for you to come and learn how to prevent time off from work and pleasure because you are sick? Remember “An Ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
Our 13 week class comes with a manual that will help you focus each week on a topic that will help you gain health while getting fit. Being strong at any age is the objective in this class. When one is strong they can defend against stress, infection, and times when other people get sick. In any epidemic, the strong survive. Do you want to be that person—that family? I know I do. I want to be the strongest and healthiest 71 year old I know. Being strong means living without aches and pains; having the energy I need to accomplish what I want and making the most of what life has to offer. I don’t want to just exist, I want to live!
Learn how you can kindle that spark within you to live life to its fullest. Start where you are and each day you can get better and better. We will help In Form you on how to do this with weekly meetings that are a safe environment with no judgment, only compassion and understanding.

Herbal eGram #664 Passion or Apathy?
Good Morning!
When we are passionate about something we feel deeply and it causes physiological changes in our body. This sparking of desire for what compels us is a driving force. What makes your heart leap? Is it someone? Is it a project you are doing? We need to have this life force as it is very energizing. Some people can actually get hooked on this energy. People who love roller coasters are example. It is a thrill but it can also contribute to conditions of inflammation.
On the other hand when someone is apathetic, it is without passion. It is a total lack of interest. This isn’t healthy either. When someone is depressed they lack any passion. Nothing seems to excite them. It is a state of numbness. Often this state is drug induced but it can also be a result of grief, fear or exhaustion. This low level energy is an environment that disease excels in. Low level frequencies contribute to ill health. One of the contributing factors is negative self-talk.
Telling yourself that you are stupid, incompetent, ugly, unloved, a loser etc. is self-defeating and potentially harmful to health. Often relationships can drag us down. Whether it is with a boss or a loved one we need to be aware of when that happens. There are many ways to help bring energy up. Some do it through music and others do it through thinking happy thoughts. One of the best ways is through belly laughing. If you can spontaneously throw yourself into a belly laugh and stay laughing for over two minutes you can’t possibly stay in a depressed state. So, find something to really laugh about or watch an old comedy.
Most of us have varying degrees of these up and down emotions depending on the subject matter. This is good for the body. We need to have periods of excitement followed by periods of relaxation. The relaxation period helps the body regenerate. If one becomes too excitable they need to have periods of calm because the strain on the body for long term excitability can be harmful due to the physiological responses that normally occur under heightened states.
Under normal circumstances during times of Passion or Excitement the blood pressure rises and for sustained periods of time this alone can cause trouble. The heart will speed up and increase in rhythm. This could lead to arrhythmia. The Adrenal Glands pump out stress hormones and these contribute to inflammation. When excitement happens over an extended period of time, the stress can cause the body to overwork and eventually break down. So, we need down time to balance the body.
On the other hand to have no excitement about things can be a very bland existence. This is when people find no fun in life. We all occasionally go through times where we are too tired or need time to process some grief. Sometimes only time can make a difference to heal from mishaps. Talking to others may help some and others just need time alone.
Occasionally this state of apathy will happen when someone takes medication for anxiety. At convention we heard from Dr. Gericke who spoke of one of his patients who he had been treating for a long time. Some of the medication to control inflammation contributed to anxiety. He decided to try our AnxiousLess product and was amazed that in a very short time she was in control. He was able to practically eliminate the Steroid medication she was on for RA. Also her medication had caused considerable weight gain and she was depressed over that. As she was able to eliminate her medications, she lost weight and gained health.
I’m very excited to be a part of Nature’s Sunshine during this innovative time. Dr. Matthew Tripp is bringing to us some totally innovative supplements that are addressing some very important issues. The best part is that these new supplements are causing no side effects and helping many people who were resigned to living with pain or medication for the rest of their life. How exciting is it to be able to shift a person’s paradigm from being apathetic to passionate about life again? Dr. Gericke said he was a skeptic. He only decided to give his patient AnxiousLess because he had already used every medication at the highest doses possible without measurable results. This woman was actually getting worse due to the medications but he didn’t know where to turn. We thank Dr. Gericke for his courage in trying this new product and helping his patient have hope again.
Who do you know that is anxious? Who do you know that has been taking corticosteroids for an inflammatory condition? Perhaps they too would benefit by trying the supplement AnxiousLess. They may even be able to reduce their inflammation by taking Curcumin. Both of these products have been proven safe to take when a person is taking medications. Dr. Gericke had his patient taking 2 in the morning and then if needed another at lunch of the AnxiousLess. He is currently having 73 patients taking this natural product and seeing no side effects at all—only benefits.

Herbal eGram #663 Breathe Deeply!
Good Morning!
We don’t think about breathing oxygen as a form of healing, but it is a very important part of energy production as well as eliminating toxins from the body. Inhalation is when we take a deep breath of oxygen rich air into the lungs. Exhalation is the process of breathing out gases and toxins, primarily carbon dioxide. The Respiratory system involves the breathing process and getting oxygen into the cells of the body as well as the cell’s ability to eliminate harmful gases.
The human respiratory system begins at the nose and mouth, where air is breathed in (inspired) and out (expired). The air tube extending from the nose is called the nasopharynx. The tube carrying air breathed in through the mouth is called the oropharynx. The nasopharynx and the oropharynx merge into the larynx. The oropharynx also carries swallowed substances, including food, water, and salivary secretion, which must pass into the esophagus and then the stomach. The larynx is protected by a trap door called the epiglottis. The epiglottis prevents substances that have been swallowed, as well as substances that have been regurgitated (thrown up), from heading down into the larynx and toward the lungs.
Think of the respiratory system as an upside down tree. The main function of the respiratory system is to provide oxygen, the most important energy source for the body's cells. Inspired air (the air you breath in) contains the oxygen, and travels down the respiratory tree to the alveoli. The oxygen moves out of the alveoli and is sent into circulation throughout the body as part of the red blood cells.
The oxygen in the inspired air is exchanged within the alveoli for the waste product of human metabolism, carbon dioxide. This gas leaves the alveoli during expiration. To restate this exchange of gases simply, you breathe in oxygen, you breathe out carbon dioxide. Lack of oxygen can contribute to poor energy levels, sleepiness, inability to think clearly and a host of other imbalances.
Some people have an obstruction that has contributed to poor breathing and that may include nasal airways as well as diaphragm issues. If one has a hiatal hernia where the stomach is jammed up against the diaphragm proper bellowing of the diaphragm is hampered. Many chiropractors are versed in relaxing the diaphragm and allowing the stomach to fall back into place. Adjustments to the mid back spinal area are often needed so that the proper nerve flow and signaling can once again be made.
Having a Hiatal Hernia not only hampers breathing but also digestion. Nutrients cannot be broken down properly and most often people feel acid coming up into the esophagus. Taking medication to slow the acid production just makes the situation worse. One must first address the cause and part of that is the interference of digestion by the hiatal hernia. Once that has been addressed then one must make strides to improve digestion by taking Food enzymes to assist the act of breaking down nutrients for better cell repair and energy.
Other concerns that may contribute to improper breathing would be sinus congestion, allergies and asthma. Often times these conditions must be addressed before proper breathing can occur. Asthma can improve when one learns to breathe properly. If one has allergies it is best to learn what triggers them. Gluten and sugar are very inflammatory and should be eliminated from the diet as well as dairy. Fresh green leafy vegetables and lean protein should be the mainstay with occasional fruit.
Water is also very important for the body. If a body is dehydrated the lungs won’t have the proper moisture necessary for smooth muscle movement and for the hair like projections that move oxygen through the breathing process. These hair-like projections are called cilia and should be coated with a thin mucus layer. When the mucus becomes sticky and toxic we are congested. This is when the body wants to cough out the offending mucus along with the toxins. Dry coughing is often a result of too little mucus. Mullein is an herb that helps the body produce better mucus.
Bronchial congestion and pneumonia are infections that involve the act of breathing. Two million Americans develop pneumonia each year, and 40,000-70,000 die from it. Pneumonia is also the most common fatal infection acquired by already hospitalized patients. One study estimates that people in the American workforce who develop pneumonia cost employers five times as much in health care as the average worker.
Other serious conditions include COPD. Smoking is the largest contributor to weak lungs. There are certain inherited defects of cilia which result in less effective protection. Cigarette smoke, inhaled directly by a smoker or second-hand by a innocent bystander, interferes significantly with ciliary function, as well as inhibiting macrophage (infection fighting) function. Other breathed in toxins will create the same or worse effect on the body’s ability to fight infection and breathe properly. People who work in salons, mechanics, paint shops or painters; basically anywhere there might be chemical fumes are endangering their respiratory system unless they take protective measures.
Breathing correctly has many benefits and posture will often play a role in your ability to breathe properly. Even sitting at a desk can be harmful to the respiratory system if you are slouched over and not sitting up straight so your body can breathe correctly. Poor posture restricts the rise and fall of the breathing diaphragm. We also know from chiropractors and the study of Ayurveda that an overly bent or imbalanced spine restricts vital life force. Nerve force energy restrictions in the spine mean less life force into all the major organs fed by the spinal nerves and celiac ganglia, including your heart, lungs and brain.
Natural Pain management techniques will include deep breathing. The Lamaze birth classes focuses on proper breathing for less pain during birthing. Breathing techniques are shown to help stimulate energy, relaxation and better mental clarity. Most people don’t involve their diaphragm when breathing—all their breath is coming from the top part of the chest and this is wrong. This type of shallow breathing encourages panic, fright and hyperventilation. Yoga is another exercise that involves learning to breathe properly.
Tony Robbins teaches that just 15 minutes of deep breathing would give one all the energy one needs for the day! You might want to check out a few of the websites that discuss proper breathing methods. If you have a condition that inhibits proper breathing consult with a qualified Natural health practitioner and eliminate foods that would be contributing to ill health.
