When do I use an anti-histamine?
NSP has a wonderful natural antihistamine called Histablock. It is used when the body is reacting too fast. For example, a bee sting: the body starts producing histamines to clear out irritants; that includes swelling. If the throat swells too much it will close off the breathing. So, an antihistamine will slow the production of histamines and keep swelling down. It also reduces fluid such as sneezing and runny nose.
I don't recommend antihistamines for colds because you do want to move the irritants out. If things are just too much and your eyes are watery and you're sneezing a lot what I recommend is to open a capsule of Histablock and put the contents under your tongue. This will quickly get the message to the mast cells to stop the flow of histamines and you should be back into normal production within 15 minutes. Then start taking Proactazyme every half hour until the irritants are under control. Histamines are proteins and when you take enzymes it helps to break down the proteins more efficiencly.
Most of the time for a cold you will need a Decongestant. Decongestants help fluid to flow more freely and get the irritants moving. You need to flush with lots of water; keep your lymphatics working. (I'll show you how to do this at another time); take deep breaths. I also feel that taking a plant enzyme like Proactazyme helps to decongest.
My favorite upper respiratory decongestant is ALJ. It comes in capsule or in liquid. You can make a tea out of it or take the capsules. The important thing is that you need to take it often maybe every 15 minutes or maybe hourly. When i am in severe distress, I'll take 2 capsules every 15 minutes. This will generally move congestion and make you cough, sneeze and blow your nose (how else is it supposed to get out?) If you take the enzyme with it the cough is productive and you are well on your way to kicking the cold.
You also need to get sleep. You don't take your supplements during sleep time. But, if you've been good with your water (at least a gallon a day), you will need to get up and go to the bathroom. Make sure you take at least another cup of water and 2 capsules of each ALJ and Proactazyme. The faster you get on this program the quicker you will kick out the irritants.
Eat minimally: clear soups and broths--stir in an egg (organic). You can steam some veggies and eat them. No dairy, orange juice or gluten as they tend to congest. Teas and other liquids are good until you feel you're enery is up and you can digest more than simple foods. Watch a funny movie. Laughter helps move congestion!
